Tim Allen has completed a fantastic renovation in Point Lonsdale using our 175mm sawn Queensland Spotted Gum weatherboards and complementing stops. The original part of the house has Western Red Cedar weatherboards on it.
Tim’s client liked the look, colour and durability of our Spotted Gum weatherboards and the heaviness and solid feel of the timber. Spotted Gum has a basic density of 1150kg/m3 when unseasoned and 950kg/m3 seasoned. Our weatherboards are unseasoned. The specie is a Class 1 above ground and Class 2 in ground durability timber.
The client also looked at Western Red Cedar however was restricted by the Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) restrictions on the site which apply to the new part of the house. Our Spotted Gum weatherboards are able to achieve a BAL 29 rating when designed in accordance with AS3959 – Construction of Buildings in Bushfire Prone Areas. We encourage customers to be familiar with the standard when building in areas where BAL ratings apply.
Tim’s client likes the character the weatherboards create and will allow them to grey off to match the existing Cedar weatherboards. We recommend customers coat timber in a clear preservative oil to extend the service life of the product. A coating like Cutek CD50 can assist timber preservation.
Tim tells us the Spotted Gum weatherboards are an outstanding product; he is very happy with the end result and highly recommends it to others.
