“Barwon Timber & Hardware - a better way to build.”
Overlay flooring is machined from solid timber with a tongue and groove profile. It is typically supplied with a plain end.
Overlay flooring can be installed over a concrete slab or structural flooring. It’s a great option for renovations where carpet or another floor covering has been removed. It can be glued and nailed down directly over existing timber flooring, concrete (80mm width only), plywood or particleboard.
It’s solid timber!
Because it’s solid timber, each board will be unique in colour and feature. A solid timber floor supports biophilic design outcomes. The raw finish timber flooring is supplied in allows you to add different finishes such as stains, oils, solvent and water base finishes to suit your design preferences. Should you choose to remove timber flooring, it can be repurposed or safely recycled.
Can be sanded and recoated multiple times
To give your solid timber floor a new look, it can be sanded and recoated multiple times. Check the set down of the tongue and groove on your overlay flooring, many profiles enable the same number of refinishes as structural timber strip flooring. Your timber floor will have a long service life and can be revitalised by completing a recoat during this.
More cost effective than 19mm solid strip timber flooring
Because it’s machined out of a smaller end section, overlay timber flooring typically comes in at a lower price than 19mm solid strip flooring.

Overlay Flooring is available in the following sizes:
(This will be dependent on the mill or supplier)
Overlay flooring is available in a range of timber grades. Each supplier names these grades differently, however we have outlined below the difference between each grade.
This grade is characterised by a clear, consistent appearance with minimal occurrences of natural features such as knots and gum veins.
This option is usually selected by those who are looking for a relatively uniform look with minimal colour variation.
This grade is the best of both worlds. It contains more natural features than the Select grade such as gum veins and knots but is still quite uniform in colour and grain.
This grade has more character than the Select grade. It features more knots, gum veins, borer holes and a larger range of colour variations compared to the higher grades.
It is a more affordable flooring option and a popular choice for those who appreciate the natural beauty of timber.
Depending on how aggressively the floor sander sands the floor, you could expect 3 or 4 sand and recoats.
One thing that has to be remembered is most flooring does not have a universal look. Most species will look different from board to board. If you don’t like a feature, there is a select grade option. As far as the colour —boards will change in colour once the coat is applied and also remember that timber floors are a natural product and therefore will vary at times.
Flooring is only available in random lengths.
If the floor is 13 metres wide you would require 2 expansion gaps.
You can lay over an existing timber floor, but it should be laid perpendicular to the existing flooring.
