Riverfest 2015 Wrap up

Dragons, Vikings, Brogans, Sailors and Kangaroos! Oh my!

On the 11th of October 2015 Barwon Timber was back again to keep our title as the reigning Dragon Boat champions at Riverfest.

After months of training with the Geelong Water Dragons the day was here at last.  This year we thought we would have some fun with a Viking theme.

heat2 300x238 - Riverfest 2015 Wrap upWe started the day off with Eddy’s famous cooked breakfast.  Then after an awesome feed it was time to face Gateway (dressed as Brogans) and GMHBA.  In a very close race, we placed first.  We were hoping this would be the first of many wins, but the Christian College Sailors (who were super fit, might we add) thought otherwise and defeated us in race two.   This rattled the Barwon Timber Vikings and made for a fairly somber walk back to the tent with much soul searching to be done.  Fortunately Bill had turned up to help Eddy keep the team well fed and focused.

Our motivational speaker, Hannah managed to gear the team up for our last race.   We knew this race was going to be a challenge, we were up against The Gordon and GMHBA.  Both of these teams had been in form all day.  In another close race, we managed to place first.   This was not to our advantage as it saw us enter the A grade finals against the Christian College Sailors, the Programmed Peas and Barwon Water – all very strong competitors.  We put in a huge effort for the last race and kept up with the other teams to finish fourth.   Congratulations to the Christian College Sailors for taking out the title.  We are happy to pass the Dragon Trophy on to you.  There is always next year to take it back.

It was a fantastic day and we thank all of our staff, friends and family who got involved this year.    There was also a little bit of excitement in the crowed as a Kangaroo hopped down to see Dragon boat River fest in all its action.

Riverfest raised a huge amount of cash totaling $50,000 for Give Where You Live which will assist fantastic local groups and programs to assist the Geelong community.   If you would like to try dragon boating, please have a look at Geelong Water Dragons Facebook page.

We would like to thank the following people:

Lauren from the Geelong Water Dragons

We couldn’t have done it without you!
