Project Yateman: Why NSL Builders Chose 70mm Blackbutt Cladding

The success of a cladding project often comes down to selecting the right profile for the design intent. On Project Yateman, NSL Builders selected Euclad QLD Blackbutt 70mm Cladding to create a striking architectural finish that balanced contemporary design with the natural beauty of timber.

We asked with the team about their product selection, installation experience, and why the 70mm profile proved to be the ideal choice for this project.

How did the narrower board contribute to the overall design and finished look?

The 70mm profile suited the design intent of this project perfectly. Run vertically, the narrower boards create a fine, consistent rhythm of lines that sits naturally with the crisp, box-like forms of the facade, giving a more tailored, architectural finish than a wider board could achieve. On a sloping site, those vertical lines also draw the eye upward, lifting the building and emphasising its height.

Colour wise, the warmth of the Blackbutt creates a striking contrast against the Woodland Grey and Surfmist finished cladding on the surrounding elevations. To carry that warmth through, we also lined the soffits in the same Blackbutt, so the whole exterior reads as one considered palette.

The 70mm board delivered exactly what the project needed: a finer, more detailed finish that complements the architecture rather than overpowering it.

The Euclad Blackbutt arrived straight, consistently milled and well graded, with minimal waste. With timber of that quality, the team could put their time into the detailing rather than sorting through boards.

How did you find the product from an installation and quality perspective?

The Euclad Blackbutt arrived straight, consistently milled and well graded, with minimal waste. The profile made for a clean, efficient install, and the narrower width made it easy to hold crisp, straight lines around window openings and corners. With timber of that quality, the team could put their time into the detailing rather than sorting through boards.

Any comments on the stability, durability, or overall performance of the cladding?

Around six months on from completion, the cladding has remained stable, with no noticeable cupping, twisting or movement. That's exactly what you want from a feature material on the most visible face of the home.

Why was 70mm cladding the right choice for this project?

The brief for the exterior was refined and contemporary, while still bringing the natural warmth of timber to the street. The 70mm board delivered exactly that: a finer, more detailed finish that complements the architecture rather than overpowering it. It's a product we'd happily specify again.
