    Decking Screws FAQs

The best screws for timber decking will depend on the quality you are looking for as well as your budget. Cheaper screws tend to break easier and corrode, whereas the higher quality screws can be a little more expensive but get the job done without any time delays.

The right grade stainless steel decking screw will last the test of time from harsh weather conditions as well as chemical corrosion (e.g. from pool or cleaning products).

Barwon Timber stock a range of decking screws that are specially designed to use on decks with steel substructures. If you need any assistance, please contact one of our friendly hardware team members.

It will depend on the width of your decking boards, joist spacing and whether you are measuring in lineal metres or square metres. A wider board of 120mm covers a larger surface area in square metres and will need fewer screws than a decking board of 90mm. Make sure you speak to a hardware team member, and they can calculate the number of decking screws you’ll need to complete the project.

There are a wide variety of screws available for fastening timber decking boards. You should first match the types and style to whether you are using hardwood timber decking boards or composite timber boards.

It is recommended to use screws for decking boards. This stops the boards from lifting and cupping and holds them more securely.

Yes, we recommend pre-drilling decking boards to prevent splitting.

Not if you use screws that have been treated with a protective coating like our B8 Bugle Battens or the Otter Chemshield Decking screws. This is not an issue with stainless steel decking screws.
