The Australian Standard AS 3740 establishes guidelines for the materials, design, and installation procedures of waterproofing systems in domestic wet areas within residential buildings.
AS 3740 is divided into 3 sections, each addressing specific aspects of waterproofing in domestic wet areas:
Section 1: Scope and Definitions - This section outlines the scope of the standard and defines key terms. It also references other normative documents.
Section 2: Materials - This section specifies the acceptable waterproof and water-resistant materials for use in waterproofing systems for walls and floors in wet areas.
Section 3: Installation - This section provides detailed instructions for the installation of waterproof and water-resistant materials in various wet areas such as showers, baths, and spas. It covers junctions, penetrations, and general requirements for shower areas including step downs and hob construction.
Additionally, the standard includes 3 informative appendices:
Appendix A: Design Considerations - This provides guidance for designing waterproofing systems in wet areas, including considerations for risk levels and material selection.
Appendix B: Falls in Floor Finishes - This appendix outlines considerations for ensuring proper drainage in floor finishes.
Appendix C: Extent of Waterproofing - Based on tables from the Building Code of Australia (BCA), this provides diagrammatic representations of the extent of waterproofing required in different areas.
