We explain what composite decking is and its benefits.

Outdoor living spaces are an integral part of many homes in Australia creating a space to connect with the outdoors. And whilst we like enjoying the outdoors, we don’t typically enjoy doing regular maintenance while we’re doing this.

Maintenance is one of the primary reasons our customers select from our composite decking range. But there are so many other reasons to consider our composite decking for your next project.  In this article we explore the benefits of using composite decking and give you some background on the evolution of the composite product and some of the terms you will come across when researching it as an option.

What is Composite Decking?

Composite decking is typically manufactured using a combination of materials.

First generation composite decking was typically wood plastic composites (WPC), Bamboo plastic composites (BPC) or stone plastic composite (SPC) in a homogenous board. ModWood is an example of a first generation WPC.

The second generation composites are coextruded (capped) decking. These products still use the first generation core boards but with a cap on 3-4 sides of the board.  The cap provides better scratch and stain resistance. These products still expand and contract with heat and the surface of some products can get hot. Examples of second generation composites are our NewTechWood and Everdeck options.

Co-extrusion is a plastic extrusion process that combines the core material of the composite decking with the capping into a single, multi-layered product.  This allows for the creation of products with combined properties acting as one new product – the cap is part of the decking and not applied in a separate step which could lead to delamination.

The third and youngest generation available are the PVC deckings. In these boards the core is changed to a PVC heavy or PVC only composition with a cap. These boards expand and contract less and are less hot to touch in summer due to the lower heat absorption of PVC. Our suite of composite decking products include third generation composites from Eva-Last, Deckorators and TimberTech.

The Benefits

Exceptional Durability and Longevity

The range of composite decking available at Barwon Timber offers impressive durability and longevity.  Some of our decking options are available with a limited product warranty up to 30 years.  Our second and third generation composite decking options are highly resistant to scratch, stain, UV fade, weather and decay.

Low Maintenance Requirements

Our composite decking range is loved for its low maintenance requirements. There is no need to apply and reapply coatings to the boards during service life. Many of our composite decking options can be cleaned with a wash and if required, a mild detergent.

Versatility

Our composite decking suite includes products that are suitable for applications in or near water.  Our Deckorators range is the standout for these types of applications.

The TimberTech range we offer can be curved allowing design freedom to create a unique outdoor space.

Our composite decking products have an accompanying concealed fastening system to enable a clean looking aesthetic not detracted from by visual fixings.

Long, consistent lengths

Composite decking comes in long, consistent lengths making planning and layout much easier.  With good planning, offcut waste can be reduced.   The TimberTech Vintage range is available in lengths up to 6.0m.

A huge range of colours and patterns

The Barwon Timber team have taken time to select a range of composite decking products, giving you a considerable choice of colours and textures. You can read more about our range in our post Selecting Composite Decking.

The Barwon Timber showroom has a huge display of composite decking options.  Our team is happy to help you make selections.

Environmentally conscious

Our range of composite decking includes options manufactured from recycled materials and wood residue and waste. Our NewTechWood range is manufactured using 95% recycled materials including HDPE plastic and timber fibres from offcuts and waste.

Locally, Everdeck is manufactured in Tasmania from at least 50% FSC certified plantation timber residues such as wood shavings and Modwood contains up to 90% reclaimed materials in its manufacture.

The TimberTech range is fully recyclable at the end of its service life - contributing to circular sustainability.

Slip resistance

Many of our composite decking products are slip-resistant by design, thanks to the textured grain on the surface.  The slip ratings of our composite decking range  are summarised in our Selecting Composite Decking post.

Conclusion

Composite decking has transformed the way we enjoy outdoor living spaces. Its blend of durability, low maintenance, aesthetic flexibility, and eco-friendly characteristics make it a standout choice for the way we live.

While the upfront investment may be higher, the long-term benefits - both financial and practical - are substantial. As the demand for sustainable, stylish, and easy-care outdoor solutions grows, composite decking stands out as a smart, forward-thinking option that promises years of beauty and enjoyment.
