Many of the doors we supply are constructed with a timber product in some aspect. Timber is a natural product that is affected by changes in moisture. Changes in the timber’s moisture content can cause the product to wrap, crack or in extreme cases rot. All timber products whether, used internally or externally, should be finished prior to install to give them the best possible life. Trials have shown that doors that are finished and handled in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations will perform better than ones that have not.

We’ve put together the following information based on our experience to help you make the right door selection for your job. Our information is a guide – the manufacturer conditions will always take precedence.

Doors that fall outside AS:2688 Timber & Composite Doors

The majority of the doors we supply fall within AS:2688.  However, there are many times where designers and builders want a door that does not fit the standard.  It is worth taking time to understand AS:2688 and the inherent risks associated with selecting a product that is not covered by a standard.

At Barwon Timber, we’ve worked with customers to resolve instances where doors have not met expectations regarding the following.

Doors covered by AS:2688 Timber and Composite Doors have bow allowances.  At time of writing the following applies.

Door Dimension Limit
Height less than or equal to 2150mm 4mm
Height greater than 2150mm and less than or equal to 2400mm 6mm
Width less than or equal to 1020mm 3mm

Doors exceeding the sizes in the table above are not covered for bow under manufacturer warranties and guarantees. Customers and their clients should be aware of the risk of bow associated with using an oversize door.

  • Doors are to be of balanced construction unless otherwise tested.
  • The moisture content of timber used in a door’s construction must fall between 10-15%.

Timber, Veneer, Duracote & MDF doors

  • If you’re painting your door, check the colour selection meets manufacturer warranty / guarantee conditions. Consideration may need to be given to light reflecting values for external doors.
  • Some manufacturer’s will required all faces of the door be painted the same colour.
  • Manufacturer’s typically recommend all six surfaces of the door are painted or sealed.
  • Semi-gloss or Satin finishes are recommended for all doors to reduce show-through.
  • A sealer must be used when staining a timber door as stains do not offer any protection against the elements.

Timber & Veneer Doors

  • Timber and veneer will vary in colour, grain pattern and texture. Images and showroom displays are a guide only.
  • If you have a preference for a grade of feature in timber please let us know when requesting a quote.
  • Seasonal and geographic variations in atmosphere can cause some shirnkage or expansion in a product - this does not consitute as a defect.

Overhead Protection & Hanging

  • Refer to manufacturer’s guidelines for overhead protection and aspect requirements.
  • Be aware some manufacturers will not cover external doors that open out.
  • Refer to manufacturer’s recommendations regarding hinging of doors.
  • For cavity doors, ensure the cavity unit can accommodate the door width and weight you’ve selected.

Duramax Fibreglass Doors (exclusive to Parkwood doors)

  • These doors can be painted dark colours. Refer to Parkwoods guide for colour selection.
  • Paint primers must have “Fibreglass” and PVC included in the suitable surfaces.
  • Gloss finishes are not recommended as they sometimes can show a “wave” in the door.
  • Most Duramax doors can have a trim allowance on each edge. Check if your door has this prior to trimming.

Aluminium Doors

  • Hume doors and Parkwood both offer a powdercoat finish.
  • Pre-drilling for locks and handles is available - refer to each supplier for  their options available.
  • Available in dark colours such as Black and Monument.

Storage, Care & Maintenance

  • Door cannot be left unsealed longer than 2 weeks from delivery to Barwon Timber.
  • Doors cannot be stored near damp or fresh plaster or any other materials that will increase moisture uptake.
  • Doors must be stored flat and off the ground.
  • To clean your door, use a damp cloth. Do not hose or use chemical or abrasives on your door.
  • Refer to manufacturer’s guidelines for prepping your door for painting, staining and sealing.
  • The manufacturer may nominate how much the door can be sanded, what grit to use and how to sand.
  • When painting/staining always refer to the paint/stain manufacturers advice.
  • Each manufacturer will have a trim allowance – check this prior to trimming.
