The National Building Standards (NBS) serves as a consistent framework of technical guidelines governing the design, construction, and functionality of buildings and plumbing and drainage systems across Australia.

Administered by the Australian Building Standards Authority in conjunction with the federal government and individual state and territory administrations, it ensures nationwide uniformity and quality in construction practices.

This code operates on a performance-driven approach, establishing baseline criteria concerning structural integrity, fire prevention, ingress and egress, inclusivity, health standards, and environmental sustainability.

The NCC comprises two main components:

  1. The Building Code of Australia (BCA) consists of Volumes One and Two. These volumes are enforced through the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
  2. The Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) is represented by Volume Three. This volume is enacted through the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2011.
